Last August while talking to the sister missionaries in front of their home in Greencastle PA, where Sadie had been serving, we were approached by an elderly woman named Marie Eshleman. She said, "You're the Mormons, aren't you?" We responded in the affirmative. She said, "Good, because I have something for you." She quickly drove to her home around the corner and retrieved several pictures she had taken with her old camera of Sadie and her companion. She proceeded to tell us the following story.
Sadie and her companion Sister Campbell had been out and about and had seen Marie in her yard. They told her that they were looking for "somebody to serve." The woman reluctantly agreed to have them help her rake up leaves in her yard. After they had raked several large piles, she was so grateful and impressed. She went in her home and snapped several pictures of them.
Later, when she read about the accident, she saved several newspaper articles and waited for the day when she could run into the Mormons again. Marie asked us if there was any way that we could get those pictures to Sadie's family. She has befriended several sets of missionaries since then.
Many tender mercies have come about in the last year. At least four individuals have been baptized into the Church who were once taught by Sadie or the other three sisters involved in the accident. Over 300 missionaries in the Pennsylvania Pittsburgh and Maryland Baltimore missions have been strengthened, fashioned, and edified through the example of Sadie and these remarkable sisters. Countless community members throughout Central PA have been made aware of the work and sacrifice of our missionaries. Sadie's light and unparalleled enthusiasm will continue to be felt in our area.
